There was a time when employers never had to worry about the ambitions of their employees. A person, once he or she was gainfully employed, would wish to stay in the same job for the rest of his or her productive life. This tendency was particularly noticeable in middle class individuals who did not have a strong educational background.
The option of studying when one is gainfully employed required too much hard work. On the whole, employers had very little to bother in terms of management of aspirations of employees. Today, an employee who has been working with you for the past four years may walk into your office and tell you that he or she has become a Master’s in business administration.
The employee may have been studying for the past two years without informing anyone in office. Suddenly, you will have an employee with a Master’s in Business Administration handling basic tasks like managing phone calls and maintaining appointment schedules. Your business may not be in a position to absorb the employee in a position where his or her skills will get more exposure.
The individual will expect a raise even if the job profile remains the same. If four or five employees resort to such a tactic in a single year, your entire organization will be stripped of its assets. You do not want your employees leaving your company to apply for the highest paying jobs their degree and experience offers. It is best to incorporate training and value addition as a part of the work profile to ensure that your employees stick with you even after they become better qualified.
